ROD'S DIARY MARCH 1
Aaaahhhh Brazil... what can I say of a love affair that has been going on 23 years since our first visit to Brazil for Rock in Rio, yes, the same Rock in Rio which appears on LaD DVD. So much happened in San Paolo I could write a novel, not just some diary notes. This may not be the most beautiful city in the world architecturally or aesthetically, but the people are wonderful and .....sorry Costa Rica, Mexico and Colombia, you're great but.... the fans here are still the reigning champions of the world even if by a reduced margin now!! What did I say before about our Latin fans. The audience was almost organic, alive, intense, like a many tentacled beast with every arm raised and waving, clapping or punching in the air. Yes, every one. And the noise.....but I am jumping ahead just a bit.
The flight from Bogota is about 2700 miles, a bit under 6 hours. We had some media with us on this trip, Fantastico returning to San Paolo, CNN and Q. The 2 news TVs did a bit of filming and interviewing en route and Ben got his interviews done with everyone for Q, despite probably still being severely hungover -- this works quite well as band prefer to spend "dead" time on the plane doing this than "time off" on the ground and it works well for me as they cant disappear -- the band I mean!
Fantastico rarely cover music I hear and when they do it's for about 3 min in the hour long Saturday night show, they are much more general news based. When it came out last Saturday, the night we played, 35 million watched it and Maiden was an extended 5 min at the end and they trailered it throughout the program. This sort of thing really allows me to get out to people some of what Maiden and their fans are about. The band enjoyed the interviews as the presenter, Alvaro Pereira Junior, had some really good questions and was well informed, although of course a lot was edited out due to time. I don't think the cameraman had done much live music stuff --
he wanted to walk on stage while we were playing in Bogota (I saved him, the band would have killed him and eaten the camera! -- but maybe this was just the language barrier and we got there pretty well in the end! It came out really well as you may have seen from the link in the news section of our site.
Media interest in Brazil is colossal and at the very top level. We did a three or four major newspapers in advance as normally we would do a press conference for them but being as our stay was over the weekend it didn't make sense due to availability and deadlines. The flight was fine and we were fortunate to get top level VIP treatment on arrival and were whisked off with our omnipresent Police outriders to carve a way through the congested San Paolo traffic, and in a city this size (30 million or so??) and with this amount of traffic it makes a big difference, believe me.
The hotel and rooms were excellent and Bruce and I went up to the top floor for Bruce's Globo News interview. By now it was about 9.50pm -- I know cos I checked -- and the program -- Jornal da Globo I think, the main weekly news show -- was due to be broadcast at 11 just 70 min later. The interviewer was gorgeous and again very well informed and she seemed to be a big fan (she came to the show too) , Fortunately their studios were 5 min from the hotel so all was completed and we were able to watch it later!! Again an unusually long piece and trailered at the end of the show. I was told there would be 10 million viewers. So in a few brief interviews we reached about 45 million people over these 2 shows -- incredible. Makes my job easy doesn't it and the band don't mind when interviews are short and at a convenient time and with knowledgable interviewers. Well, they don't moan too much, but who could with such great exposure for our music. It seems in South America that everyone is a fan, police outriders, airport staff, hotel staff and of course in prime place all the fans who continually surround our hotels keeping us awake at times
with their chants. We forgive you ..... most of the time anyway! Quite an experience.
We went down to a really good bar on the first floor and everyone was there -- our crew, the air crew, CNN, the promoters, doc crew, William and Ben, friends we had met before in Brazil and the atmosphere and anticipation of the show hung heavy in the air (isn't that poetic, or just clichéd maybe !)
Decent nights sleep and awoke to ....... A DAY OFF ..... the last one was LA and since then we have played to about 210,000 fans! And it's a Saturday which means limited incoming, not missiles, emails. So did a bit of catching up in the morning being up surprisingly early -- ok, 9am -- then we met in the lobby about 2 to go to THE FOOTBALL MATCH. We always try to get a game in Brazil though only Steve regularly plays -- but his home team from the East End of London came over to represent us, kitted out in replicas of the original Somewhere In Time footie shirts. Through different leagues as they got older, Steve has played with these guys since he was 15 and they really are his best mates. Steve says that makes 25 years they have played together.....? The game was against some music people, some bands including a couple from local heroes Sepultura who are lovely guys, and three ex pros for Corinthians, two being a father and son who were both goalkeepers for this big San Paolo team. And boy did they need them. We won 7-0 and believe me the goalkeepers were outstanding as you would expect. Without them it would have been a cricket score! There were loads of media requests to cover this game but EMI only allowed sports media, magazines and TV, including Globo Sports, plus our CNN team and doc crew of course. There is such huge interest in the band here that Globo are showing highlights -- to include 2 magnificent Steve Harris goals -- on their weekly summary program this Saturday -- it only has 10 million viewers. Isn't this where we came in??!!!
Andre, Nando and Luiz from EMI arranged all this and did a terrific job. they worked so hard and effectively that I am going to sent them this so they can see it and know we mean it. A very able and committed label makes life so much easier when you are far from home and these guys went out of their way to not only arrange a convenient and outstanding media schedule for us, but also a fine away football match . Nando came to Colombia to take care of Fantastico and Luiz has been with us since SP looking after Rolling Stone who are travelling with us.
I think Andre must have avoided the travel as he musnt be able to drink enough anymore!
Great barbeque after the game with amazing Brazilian beef and beers then back to hotel for another good night in that excellent bar.......and most everyone was there again. I am writing this in Buenos Aires having fought our way in here through hordes of fans (but more of that later) and its now close to 1am so gonna close the book for now so will make San Paolo a two parter -- something it richly deserves!!

O que eu posso dizer sobre uma história de amor que já dura 23 anos desde nossa primeira visita ao Brasil para o Rock In Rio, sim, o mesmo Rock In Rio que aparece no DVD Live After Death. Tanta coisa aconteceu em São Paulo que eu poderia escrever um livro, e não umas poucas anotacões em um diário. Essa pode não ser a cidade mais bonita do mundo arquitetônica ou esteticamente, mas as pessoas são maravilhosas e... me desculpe Costa Rica, México e Colômbia, vocês são demais mas... os fãs daqui são ainda os campeões absolutos do mundo, mesmo que por uma pequena margem agora! O que falei antes a respeito de nossos fãs Latino-americanos. A multidão estava quase "viva", intensa, como se fosse um bicho cheio de tentáculos com cada braço levantado e acenando, batendo palmas ou dando socos no ar. Sim, cada um. E o barulho... Mas estou me adiantando um pouco.
O vôo de Bogotá é de aproximadamente 2700 milhas, um pouco menos de 6 horas. Havia algumas equipes de imprensa conosco na viagem, do Fantástico retornando a São Paulo, CNN e Q. Os dois telejornais filamram e entrevistaram durante o vôo, e o Ben finalizou suas entrevistas com todo mundo para Q, apesar de provavelmente estar com uma baita ressaca -- é muito bom já que a banda prefere fazer isso durante o "tédio" do vôo a usar o seu tempo livre no país e também é bom pra mim porque eles não podem sumir -- os caras da banda, claro!
Pelo que eu fiquei sabendo o Fantástico raramente faz reportagens sobre música, e quando faz são só uns 3 minutos no programa de uma hora do sábado (domingo, né, Rod?), é um programa mais de notícias em geral. No sábado passado, quando a banda tocou (foi domingo, Rod ), 35 milhões de pessoas assistiram a reportagem e o Maiden ganhou 5 minutos no final do programa, e ficaram anunciando durante a programação. Esse tipo de coisa me permite mostrar um pouco de como o Maiden e seus fãs são. A banda gostou da entrevista uma vez que o apresentador, Alvaro Pereira Junior, fez boas perguntas e estava bem informado, embora obviamente boa parte tenha sido editada devido à falta de tempo. Eu não acho que o câmera tenha trabalhado muito com música ao vivo --
ele queria subir ao palco enquanto tocávamos em Bogotá(eu o salvei,a banda o teria matado e comeria a câmera!--mas talvez fosse apenas a barreira da linguagem e nós chegamos lá muito bem afinal de contas!Ficou bem legal,como vcs podem conferir no link em nosso site.
O interessa da mídia no Brasil é colossal e é nivelado no topo.Fizemos dois ou tres dos jornais mais importantes,normalmente fariamos uma coletiva de imprensa,mas como iriamos ficar pelo fim de semana não faria sentido devido a disposição e prazos de entrega.O voo foi tranquilo e fomos felizardos de ter um ótimo tratamento VIP na chegada e fomos escoltados pelos sempre onipresentes policiais q nos ajudaram a driblar o transito congestionado de São Paulo.E em uma cidade deste tamanho(30 milhões?)e com essa quantidade de trafego,faz uma bela diferença,pode acreditar!
O hotel era excelentee Bruce e eu fomos ao ultimo andar para a gravação da entrevista de Bruce para a Globo News.Eram maisomenos 21:50--sei pq chequei--e o programa--acho q Jornal Da Globo--o principal programa de notícias da semana--seria transmitido as 23,apenas 70 minutos depois.A entrevistadora era gostosa e muito bem informada e parecia ser uma grande fã(ela veio ao show tb),felizmente seus estudios ficavam a 5 minutos do hotel,então pudemos assistir depois.Novamente uma não usual longa reportagem com previas ao longo do programa foi exibida ao final.Me disseram q o alcance era de 10 milhões de expectadores.Então em alguma spequenas entrevistas apenas,alcançamos cerca de 45 milhões d epessoas só nestes dois programas--incrível.
Torna meu trabalho mais fácil,não faz?E a banda não se importa quando são entrevistas curtas e em horários adequados com entrevistadores bem informados.Bom,eles não gemem muito,mas quem iria,com tanta boa exposição para nossa música?Parece q na América do Sul todos são fãs,policia rodoviaria,funcionários do aeroporto,do hotel,e é claro,em primeiro lugar,nossos fãs q permaneciam cercando nossos hotéis e por vezes nos mantendo acordados.

Fomos a um bar muito legal e todos estavam lá--nossa equipe,a equipe de voo,CNN,os produtores,equipe do documentário,Willian e Ben,e os amigos q fizemos no Brasil,e a atmosfera e exaltação para o show preenchia o ar(não é poético?talvez cliché?)
Uma boa noite de sono e acordamos pra...UM DIA DE FOLGA.....o último tinha sido em Los Angeles,e desde então já tocamos pra aproximadamente 210 mil fãs!!E é sábado,o q significa poucos compromissos.Então fiz um pouco de(desculpem,não sei o q é catching up)pela manhã acordando surpreendentemente cedo--ok,9 da manhã--então fomos pro lobby lá pelas 14hs pra ir pro jogo de futebol.Nós sempre tentamos armar jogos no Brasil,ainda q apenas o Steve jogue regularmente--mas seu time de casa vindo de East End London veio pra nos representar,uniformizados em réplicas das camisetas ioficiais de time da era Somewhere in Time.Através de diferentes ligas,enquanto eles cresciam,Steve tem jogado com esses caras desde q tinha 15 anos e estes são realmente seus melhores amigos.Steve diz q fazem 25 anos q eles jogam juntos...?O jogo foi contra alguns músicos,alguma sbandas,incluindo dois dos heróis locais do Sepultura,q são grandes caras,e 3 ex profissionais do Corinthians,dois sendo pai e filho,ambos goleiros deste grande time paulista.E rapaz,eles precisaram deles!Ganhamos de 7 a 0 e acredite em mim,os goleiros eram ótimos,como era de se esperar.Se não fosse por eles teríamos tido um placar de jogo de Cricket!Haviam muitos pedidos da mídia pra cobrir este evento,mas a EMI só permitiu mídia de esportes,revistas e TV,incluindo o Globo Esporte,mais nossa equipe da CNN e equipe pro documentário,é claro.Existe grande interesse na banda aquie a Globo tem mostrado os melhores momentos--incluindo os dois gols magníficos do Steve Harris--no seu programa de esportes semanal deste sábado.
André,Nando e Luiz da EMI organizaram isso tudo e fizeram um grande trabalho.Eles trabalharam tão duro e efetivamente q vou lhes mandar isto(o diario) pra q vejam o quanto nós apreciamos.Uma empresa muito eficiente e comprometida faz a vida muito mais fácil quando se está longe de casa,e estes caras vieram de longe não só para organizar uma conveniente e maravilhosa organização de compromissos com a mídia,como tambem um jogo ótimo de futebol.Nando veio pra Colômbia pra cuidar do Fantásticoe Luiz está conosco desde São Paulo,pra cuidar da Rolling Stone,q está viajando conosco.
Acho q o André evitou essa parte da viagem pois não poderia mais beber o suficiente!Um ótimo churrasco depois do jogo com maravilhosa carne e cerveja Brasileira e então de volta para o hotel pra outra boa noite naquele bar excelente.....e quase todo mundo estava lá de novo!Estou escrevendo isto de Buenos Aires depois de lutar pra atravessar hordas de fãs(mais sobre isso depois)agora é quase uma da manhã então vou fechar o livro e fazer São Paulo em duas partes.Algo tão rico como isso merece!!!

Uma boa noite de sono e acordamos pra...UM DIA DE FOLGA.....o último tinha sido em Los Angeles,e desde então já tocamos pra aproximadamente 210 mil fãs!!E é sábado,o q significa poucos compromissos.Então fiz um pouco de(desculpem,não sei o q é catching up)pela manhã acordando surpreendentemente cedo--ok,9 da manhã--então fomos pro lobby lá pelas 14hs pra ir pro jogo de futebol.Nós sempre tentamos armar jogos no Brasil,ainda q apenas o Steve jogue regularmente--mas seu time de casa vindo de East End London veio pra nos representar,uniformizados em réplicas das camisetas ioficiais de time da era Somewhere in Time.Através de diferentes ligas,enquanto eles cresciam,Steve tem jogado com esses caras desde q tinha 15 anos e estes são realmente seus melhores amigos.Steve diz q fazem 25 anos q eles jogam juntos...?O jogo foi contra alguns músicos,alguma sbandas,incluindo dois dos heróis locais do Sepultura,q são grandes caras,e 3 ex profissionais do Corinthians,dois sendo pai e filho,ambos goleiros deste grande time paulista.E rapaz,eles precisaram deles!Ganhamos de 7 a 0 e acredite em mim,os goleiros eram ótimos,como era de se esperar.Se não fosse por eles teríamos tido um placar de jogo de Cricket!Haviam muitos pedidos da mídia pra cobrir este evento,mas a EMI só permitiu mídia de esportes,revistas e TV,incluindo o Globo Esporte,mais nossa equipe da CNN e equipe pro documentário,é claro.Existe grande interesse na banda aquie a Globo tem mostrado os melhores momentos--incluindo os dois gols magníficos do Steve Harris--no seu programa de esportes semanal deste sábado.
André,Nando e Luiz da EMI organizaram isso tudo e fizeram um grande trabalho.Eles trabalharam tão duro e efetivamente q vou lhes mandar isto(o diario) pra q vejam o quanto nós apreciamos.Uma empresa muito eficiente e comprometida faz a vida muito mais fácil quando se está longe de casa,e estes caras vieram de longe não só para organizar uma conveniente e maravilhosa organização de compromissos com a mídia,como tambem um jogo ótimo de futebol.Nando veio pra Colômbia pra cuidar do Fantásticoe Luiz está conosco desde São Paulo,pra cuidar da Rolling Stone,q está viajando conosco.
Acho q o André evitou essa parte da viagem pois não poderia mais beber o suficiente!Um ótimo churrasco depois do jogo com maravilhosa carne e cerveja Brasileira e então de volta para o hotel pra outra boa noite naquele bar excelente.....e quase todo mundo estava lá de novo!Estou escrevendo isto de Buenos Aires depois de lutar pra atravessar hordas de fãs(mais sobre isso depois)agora é quase uma da manhã então vou fechar o livro e fazer São Paulo em duas partes.Algo tão rico como isso merece!!!
